7 Things You Need To Know Before Hailing A Taxi In Ghana (Photos)

Catching a cab in Ghana is not as easy as it is in the western world. Our drivers can be very tricky and try to outwit passengers by charging exorbitant fares, especially if they know you’re a stranger.

Some drivers are very good and will be very honest with you, but some are in to rip you off your money so you need to be very careful. Also, note that taxis in Ghana do not come with meters and so prices are at the discretion of the driver and subject to negotiation.

1. You Need To Negotiate Before Hopping In

Before hopping into a taxi in Ghana, you need to negotiate and agree on the fare before moving. Don’t ever get to your destination before negotiating because if you do so, it might end up in a fight if you disagree on the amount.

2. Be Sure Of Your Destination

You must be sure of your destination before leaving. If you’re not sure, it’s better to find out from the driver if he knows the place. If he does, find out how much the distance will cost. It will be a struggle when you assume your destination only to get there and realise you have to go further. The driver will demand you pay an extra amount and this might end up in a scuffle.

3. Avoid The Rickety Ones

If you really want to get to your destination safely and quicker, then it will be better to avoid the rickety Taxis. Ignore the popular saying, “Don’t mind the body, mind the engine”, because that same engine can fail you on your way. Worse case is, it can ruin your shirt or attire.

4. It’s Nice To Be Chatty

Ghanaians are very nice people and same can be said about the taxi drivers. Being friendly and chatty can make you win their trust and probably may even push them to reduce the fare. You can get their number and call them anytime you need their service.

5. It’s Better To Know The Route And Shortcuts

Some taxi drivers are tricky, when they realise you don’t know your route, they will intentionally take the longest route and charge exorbitant amounts even though they know there is a short way to get to your destination, so it will be better to know your route before boarding a taxi in Ghana.

6. Watch Before You Hop In

Never board a taxi you’re chattering when there’s someone else in the car. Sometimes after hailing a taxi, you realize someone is in the car and they tell you, “Oh! he will drop at the next junction so you can hop in”. Take that statement with a pinch of salt. There is always another taxi and so for security reasons, never hop in if another person is in the car, unless you going for the public one.

7. Take Their Number When The Service Is Good

It is difficult coming by very good taxi drivers these days and so when you realize the driver is good, it’s better you pick his number and call him whenever you need his service.
