Dr Carneiro, Mourinho and Chelsea
settled an out-of-court pay-off in
June after she took her former
employers to a tribunal for a
constructive dismissal and sex
discrimination claim.

Chelsea issued an embarrassing
apology to bring an end to the case
at Croydon’s London South
Employment Tribunal earlier this year
after Dr Carneiro snubbed a
£1.2million settlement offer from the
Premier League giants. But the case
was not without its casualties, Dr
Carneiro revealing she was targeted
by vicious online trolls who remained
loyal to Mourinho.

When she was speaking with the Daily Mail in
her first public interview since the
case, Dr Carneiro said: ‘Even though
I don’t have a presence on social
media – I think I have made one post
ever in my life – some of the threats
of sexual violence and death threats
make it through.
They [the abusers]
just seem to be faceless cowards.

‘I had incredible support from day
one and I want to thank all the
people who approached me and
expressed support”

.

“When you are going through an
incredibly difficult time that support
means a lot.”

Dr Carneiro felt the wrath of
Mourinho after she ran on to the field
to treat Eden Hazard in the closing
stages of Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with
Swansea in August 2015.

Mourinho was furious at the
Gibraltar-born doctor’s actions,
arguing she was leaving his team
without another key player following
Thibaut Courtois’ sending off.

But Dr Carneiro has always
maintained her belief she did nothing
wrong in treating the Belgian star and
believes her case has set a
dangerous precedent for the sports
medical profession.

She said: “When a doctor runs on the
pitch to treat a patient, a player who
requests medical assistance, they
have to do their duty as a doctor as
defined by the GMC [General Medical
Council]x.

She also said “That guidance is the same whether
you work on a football pitch or an
NHS department or in a warzone or
in a GP surgery. It is about the health
and safety of the patients you treat
and those guidelines exist for a
reason.”

Following her axing from the Chelsea
bench and bust-up with Mourinho, Dr
Carneiro left the London club and
argued the Portuguese manager had
called her a ‘daughter of a whore’. In
court she also claimed she was
regularly the victim of sexually
explicit comments from colleagues in
her time with the 2012 Champions
League winners.

The court settlement has allowed Dr
Carneiro to move on with her life and
while she remains involved in
football to some degree, she believes
discrimination and a lack of gender
equality remain problems in the sport
in 2016.

She said “It is widely accepted that football
has a discrimination problem”.

“I really do feel that way but I think it
is the least challenged form of
discrimination”

“It is one thing to say ‘We will end
discrimination’ and I think it is widely
accepted that discrimination exists in
the sport”.

Anti-Semitic and other racist
comments are widely condemned
and I don’t think that is the case
[with sexism] and it begs the
question what that leaves room for
behind the scenes”.
